Uninsured Motorist Insurance, Do I Need It?

Everybody knows that if you own a vehicle in California, you are required by law to purchase auto insurance.  We are bombarded with ads on TV and radio from auto insurances companies claiming to have the best rates, but what are they selling you for that rate?  There are several different types of auto insurance coverage that you can buy. Keep in mind, I don’t sell auto insurance. Some types of coverage protect you in claims made by others against you,  while others protect you when somebody causes harm to you or your vehicle.

Uninsured/Underinsured coverage is a type of coverage that protects you and your family if you are injured in an accident cause by an uninsured or underinsured motorist.  It  is important that you purchase this kind of additional coverage as there are many people on the road that violate the law and don’t have auto insurance.

Even if they have the required auto insurance, it might not cover your car if you have a nice car, or worse it may not cover your medical bills if you are injured in the accident.  If  one of those drivers causes injury to you or your family,  you will need your own coverage to get fully compensated. That is what uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage is for.

I cannot tell you how many times I have spoken to people that have suffered serious injuries due to the fault of an uninsured or underinsured motorist but did not protect themselves by purchasing the right coverage.  They saved $50 per year on their premium but now they are stuck with thousands of dollars in medical bills and lost earnings  and have no way to get reimbursed.

In most instances, auto insurance companies are obligated to offer uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage as part of the policy.  Make sure you accept the coverage and that the UM/UIM policy limit is the same as your bodily injury liability limit.  The coverage will protect you and your family not only when driving your car, but also while you are a pedestrian or riding a bicycle.
